Planning a trip to East Timor (Timor-Leste)? The visa situation is refreshingly straightforward for most travellers — especially if you’re flying into Dili.

Key Facts

  • Visa type: Single-entry tourist visa on arrival (VOA)
  • Duration: 30 days
  • Cost: USD 30 (cash)
  • Eligibility: Available to most nationalities, including Australian passport holders
  • Extension: Can be extended for a further 30 days

Arriving by Air (Visa on Arrival)

If you fly into President Nicolau Lobato International Airport (Dili), you can get a 30-day visa on arrival. You will need:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date
  • USD 30 in cash to pay the visa fee
  • A confirmed return or onward ticket

The process takes about 10–15 minutes at the immigration desk. Just have your cash ready — they do not take cards.

Arriving by Land

If you are crossing into Timor-Leste overland from Indonesian West Timor, you cannot get a visa on arrival at the border. You will need to apply in advance at the Timor-Leste Consulate in Kupang, Indonesia, for a Visa Application Authorisation. Present this at the border when you arrive.

Extending Your Visa

Need more time? You can apply for a 30-day extension at the Immigration Office in Dili. Go at least a few days before your visa expires, and bring:

  • Your passport
  • A passport photo
  • Additional fee (approximately USD 35)

Practical Tips

  • Prescription medication: Carry a doctor’s letter listing your prescriptions. Some medications are restricted.
  • Departure tax: A USD 10 airport departure tax is payable in cash when you leave (check with your airline as some include it in the ticket).
  • Yellow fever: If you are arriving from a yellow fever country, you must show a vaccination certificate.
